BELIEVERS AGAINST THE WAR
OPPOSES WAR FUNDING BILL
Clackamas, OR – BELIEVERS AGAINST THE WAR (BAW) opposes the Supplemental Appropriations Bill that will provide an additional $100 billion to “support our troops” in Iraq, which will only serve to leave our troops stranded in a vast Iraqi shooting gallery for another year or more – with no clear mission, and no end in sight.
Congress has the exclusive constitutional authority to raise, fund and regulate an army, and can therefore directly order the end of combat in Iraq. The Constitution is very specific, assigning ALL the war-making powers to the Congress – leaving the Executive branch, or the generals, with NONE of those powers.
David Brownlow, BAW Executive Director, said, “The arbitrary redeployment dates and benchmarks included in the funding bill is the wrong solution to ending an occupation that is immoral, illegal, and ungodly. From a practical standpoint, any restrictions on the funding would be completely meaningless, as the President would likely hold those with the same low regard he has shown for the numerous other laws he has determined do not apply to him. “
Brownlow continued, “If our Congress pumps another hundred billion into this failed effort, then this becomes their war. The have a chance to end it now. The only money that should be authorized is the amount it will take to evacuate all of our combat troops in a safe and orderly manner. Only then can we begin to seek the wisdom to know how we should make amends to the Iraqi people for the carnage and destruction we have wrought on their country.”
BELIEVERS AGAINST THE WAR calls for an end to the congressional gamesmanship that is taking place over the war-funding bill. This $100 billion appropriation is bad for our troops, bad for our country, and bad for Iraq – the passage of which will ensure that thousands more of the finest our nation has to offer will become casualties of this continued madness.
It is time to cut off all funding for the occupation of Iraq. It is time to bring our troops home!
